High Torque Drive Component Options

Date: November 25, 2024

High Torque pulley and belt diagramDue to a high-torque motor’s characteristic momentary overload upon starting, tolerance of sudden shock loads, and/or need to supply constant torque over a range of speeds, high-torque drive (HTD) components must have a higher load capacity than pulleys, sprockets and belts used in standard applications.

High-torque components offer the torque-handling characteristics of chains and sprockets and can endure the types of high-rpms that v-belts provide. They can be found in a range of applications from industrial machinery to small household appliances. WM Berg provides quality HTD components for common industrial applications, including:

  • 3D printing
  • Machine tool drives
  • Robotics
  • Precision applications requiring indexing or sequencing

High Torque Drive Belt & Pulley Benefits

High torque drive components, like the HTD belts and pulleys in our catalog, offer a unique capacity to handle both high torque and high RPM requirements, making them a versatile option for drive systems. Some of the benefits of these components include:

  • High torque tolerances
  • Quiet operation
  • Stretch-resistance
  • High accuracy
  • Handles high-reversing loads

HTD Belts

Several HTD belt types made from polyurethane and neopreneHigh torque drive belts have become the industrial standard for power transmission compared to chain drives, particularly wherever low-noise and reduced weight is desired. They also have none of the disadvantages of v-belts, which must be re-tensioned and commonly experience added friction and slippage. They represent several advancements in synchronous belt technology, particularly their curvilinear tooth profile which provides more surface contact than ordinary trapezoidal teeth, lending to more torque and load-carrying capacity with less damage to the belt.

  • Polyurethane
  • Nylon
  • Neoprene

HTD Pulleys

High-torque pulley made from anodized aluminumPulleys incorporated in high-torque drive systems have tooth profiles that match the curvilinear shape of HTD belts. When paired correctly (with matching pitch), these pulleys provide higher torque load per centimeter of belt width and offer better positioning accuracy.

Berg stocks a range of high-torque pulleys and can engineer custom pulleys and belts to handle distinct torque to speed ratios, offering pulley options in a range of materials, including:

  • Aluminum anodized
  • 10% glass-filled polycarbonate
  • Acetal
  • Lexan
  • Polycarbonate lexan
