Custom Non-Ferrous Metal Gears

Aluminum alloys and other non-ferrous metals are non-magnetic because they don't contain any iron. Aluminum isn't as strong as stainless steel, but it's very lightweight, giving it a higher strength-to-weight ratio. Aluminum alloys are also easier to machine. Phosphor bronze is an alloy made of copper, tin, and phosphorus. Phosphor bronze has high wear resistance, making it a good option for high-friction applications. Sintered bronze is heat treated, quiet, and slides easily (low friction). Naval brass (464 brass) is strong, corrosion resistant, and an excellent choice for high-temperature environments.

Custom Steel Gears

Steel (aka carbon steel or mild steel) is a little stronger than stainless steel because it has less carbon in it, but it's less heat resistant. Steel costs less than stainless steel, making it a good choice for applications where high strength is needed, and corrosion resistance is not a concern.

Custom Plastic Gears

Polyacetal (aka acetal, POM) is an engineering thermoplastic offering the strength and durability of metal at a much lighter weight. Polyacetal gearing is ideal for applications involving high temperatures and/or harsh chemicals. Polycarbonate is also an engineering thermoplastic with excellent strength, rigidity and impact resistance. Polycarbonate with glass reinforcement increases its durability and reduces friction.

Custom Helical Gear


WM Berg produces custom right angle gear options including helical gears, or dry-fixed gears, which are designed to manage a smooth transition of force with minimal axial thrust and sliding friction for a quieter mechanical flow. Customizable helical gear attributes include: type, helical hand, pitch, gear bore and teeth count. Custom helical gears can be designed to be meshed in parallel or non-parallel shaft orientation.

Custom Anti-Backlash Gear


Choose from custom spur, worm, and bevel zero backlash gear styles to eliminate inaccuracies and minimize backlash in low-torque gear train scenarios. Custom anti-backlash gears can be engineered to meet the criteria for precision rotary motion control applications with any of the following inputs: type, style, pitch, pitch diameter, material, bore size, and number of teeth.

Custom Internal Gear


Custom internal gears provide designers with the ability to achieve higher contact and drive ratios than standard spur gears at shorter center distances. Custom internal gears also enable a velocity change without a directional change, which would require an idler gear with standard spurs.

Custom Spur Gear


With WM Berg you can reengineer the pitch, pitch diameter, gear bore, face size, number of teeth, and material of the single most common type of gear. Custom Worm Gear


Customize the helix angle, length, outside diameter, material, number of threads and number of leads of a worm, with right or left-handed threads. We can also reverse engineer a worm from a worm gear if needed, or design a custom gearbox with worms and worm gears.
