Case Study: Dependable Kevlar Drive Belts

Date: May 16, 2024

A manufacturer supporting the U.S. military that specializes in radar antennas approached Berg with an early design need for a drive system on a small antenna.

Challenge: Broken Drive Belts

The antenna was to be mounted on both airborne and ground-based vehicles to assist with audio communication. The need was for precise rotational control of the antenna while the vehicles were moving.

Other products the customer had tried resulted in broken belts due to high stresses and mismatched pulleys.

Solution: Kevlar Encased Belts

Berg standard Kevlar drive belts with polyurethane overmolding were quickly identified as the solution. Our belts are also available with polyurethane over a stainless steel cable, but Kevlar (aramid fiber) is ideal for applications requiring greater flexibility.

Additional benefits of Berg belts and chains:

  • No backlash
  • No lubrication required
  • Rust proof
  • Lightweight
  • Silent operation
  • Custom lengths
  • Antistatic
  • Flame resistant
  • Available in 10 colors

Strong, durable and – most importantly – reliable, these Berg products are now deployed as part of our client’s antenna positioning systems, allowing greater communication and situational awareness for U.S. troops.
